About VFS
Team Veterans for Sarcoma is teaming with "The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative" for the 2008 Team Sarcoma Initiative.
The Team Sarcoma Initiative is an internationally coordinated set of events to raise public awareness of sarcoma and help raise funds for to support sarcoma research. It will take place worldwide during July 12-20, 2008. For information regarding which events team VFS will be involved with please select the "Upcoming Events" tab.
The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative (www.LiddyShriverSarcomaInitiative.org) helps fund research that is targeted at finding a cure for sarcoma and research that is attempting to develop more effective treatment regimens than those currently available.
Their logo represents patients, their caregivers and loved ones, and the medical team working together to improve the quality of life for those who have sarcoma. The breaks in the links and in-between them are meant to remind us of the difficulties that often occur in communicating with each other. The Forget-Me-Not touches each link and represents the many people who have touched the lives of the patients, the caregivers, and the physicians in their journeys with sarcoma. The background consists of the small round blue cells that identify Ewing’s sarcoma, which is the sarcoma Liddy had.
In April 2002, Elizabeth (Liddy) Shriver, the daughter of Bruce and Beverly Shriver, was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma. Liddy died on January 15, 2004. She was 37-years old. Liddy was an avid cyclist and biking was an integral part of the way in which she approached dealing with her cancer. As her disease became increasingly serious, she decided to do some of the things that she had always wanted to do. Among the list of things was going on a few multi-day bike tours. And do them she did. A 200-mile 4-day bike tour in Louisiana, a 6-day bike tour in Denmark, and a multi-day foliage tour in New England.
The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative has created a "Brilliant" video titled "A Forgotten Cancer." You can view it on YouTube at http://tinyurl.com/3cv2du. I ask that everyone takes the time to view this.
